Arts Variety Newsletter
Num. 4/Spring 2005
Hello, Are you enjoying the Spring Season? We are, even when we got snow just a few days after temperatures in the 70's and 80's and sunny blue skies. If you noticed that you did not get a newsletter in the Winter, it was because we were busy making changes to the website, and because we went on vacation for a few weeks to escape the cold Michigan weather. We hope you will learn something new when you read this Spring Newsletter.
About April's BirthstoneApril's birthstone is the Diamond. It is a pure carbon. Diamond is the hardest known substance, and will easily scratch any material. It can be cut because it's hardness is not uniform. It is the best known gem, occurs in a variety of shapes, and in a wide range of colors. Diamonds were traded in India 400 years before Christ was born. The diamond is also the 10th, 60th and 75th anniversary stone.
About May's BirthstoneMay's birthstone is the Emerald. The emerald is a green variety of beryl. Beryl crystals can be found throughout the world. Emerald crystals never reach a very large size. They have inclusions that can be used to identify them or to distinguish them from manmade emeralds. It is one of the most highly prized gems. Cleopatra loved her emeralds, and the emerald mines in Egypt were worked a couple of thousand years before Christ was born. The emerald is also the 20th and 35th anniversary stone.
About June's BirthstoneJune's birthstone is the Pearl. A pearl is formed in an oyster as a reaction to a foreign object. Cultured pearls are created by adding a piece of shell inside an oyster. Layers of nacre grow over the added substance. Fresh water pearls are cultured in freshwater mussels and tend to be relatively inexpensive. Natural pearls are the most expensive, followed by cultured pearls. They are generally white, brown, silver, cream, black or pink, and are sensitive to acids, dryness, and humidity.
The Pearl is also the 3rd and 30th anniversary stone. To learn about Pearl Grading, click here. To learn about caring for your Pearls, click here.
Did you know that...there are emerald and aquamarine mines in North Carolina, and you can tour them and fill a bucket with gems? Check the web for more information, or e-mail us.
What's new?
As usual, new jewelry has been added. We don't carry green emerald jewelry, but we do have a green chalcedony necklace. If you like big stones, you will love it. If you prefer smaller beads, we have designed this beautiful red jasper necklace for you. Click on photo to see other jewelry and find a larger image of these jewelry pieces. We have also designed more bracelets. Glass beads are very popular. This sterling silver blue and green glass bracelet can be worn with jeans for a casual occasion, or with an elegant dress for a more formal occasion. Our earrings designed with thread earwire are coming soon, so don't miss it.
