Num. 3/November-December 2004
About November's BirthstoneNovember's birthstones is the Topaz. Blue Topaz is the 4th anniversary stone and the Imperial Topaz is the 23rd anniversary stone. In 1969 it became the state gem of Utah and of Texas. The topaz is one of the hardest minerals in nature. It comes in clear, yellow, brown, orange, red, pink, green and blue. The color of the blue topaz is created by irradiation. The blue topaz is often confused with aquamarine. The golden brown to yellow topaz is confused with the citrine, which is less valuable and is sold under the name topaz. Both the egyptians and the romans associated this gemstone with the god of the sun.
About December's BirthstoneThe December's birthstones is the turquoise. It is also the 11th anniversary stone. It was adopted as New Mexico's State gem in 1967, as Arizona's State Gemstone in 1974 and as Nevada's semi-precious gemstone in 1987. The turquoise is probably the most valuable non-transparent mineral. It's color varies from greenish blue to sky blue shades. Take care of your turquoise jewelry, the color can change when exposed to the skins oils. Fine, untreated turquoise is rare. The blue color is caused by copper, while the green color is caused by iron or chromium. Much of the market's turquoise has been dyed or stabilized with resin to seal it and improve it's color. Since it is a relatively soft gemstone, it requires a hardening treatment.
Did you know that...according to legend, the topaz helps improve eyesight. The most famous topaz is the Braganza, a giant specimen set in the Portuguese Crown. Montezuma's treasure includes a carved serpent covered by a mosaic of turquoise.
