Num. 2/September-October 2004
Septembers Birthstone is... the Sapphire. Just like the Ruby, it belongs to the corundum group and has very good hardness. The blue Sapphire is the most common and you can find it in all shades of blue, but also comes in many other colors (yellow, pink, orange, purple, white and even black.). A Fancy Sapphire is a non-blue Sapphire. The Ruby is a red sapphire. Oriented crystal inclusions cause a six-pointed-star like effect to form the Star Sapphire. The Sapphire symbolizes loyalty and faithfulness. It is easy to care for, just requiring normal usual care. It is also the 5th and 45th Anniversary Stone.
Octobers Birthstone is... the Opal, which is considered a mineraloid. It has random chains of silicon and oxygen packed into tiny spheres. Each pocket produces a different color, depending on the angle at which you view it. It emits multicolored flashes of light. The flashes can be of any color of the rainbow. The black Opal is the most valuable. It can be sensitive to impacts and low temperature. The Opal is also the 14th Anniversary Stone.
Did you know that... in the Middle Ages the Opal was treasured due to the belief that it was beneficial to the eyesight.
