About July's Birthstone
July's birthstone is the ruby, and it is also the 15th, 40th and 80th anniversary stone. Ruby is the red variety of the corundum mineral, one of the hardest minerals on Earth. It is rarer than diamonds and one of the most valuable gemstones. It's name derives from the latin word "rubens", which means red. Ruby gemstones are valued according to characteristics like size, color, clarity and cut. They do have inclusions, but the fewer and less obvious they are, the more valuable the ruby is. If there are no inclusions, it is probably an artificial ruby and it is less valuable. The Ruby also has great hardness, second only to the diamond. This beautiful gemstone has symbolised blood, anger, love, sexual desire, courage, fire, royalty, passion, power, wealth, authority, friendship and bravery. Ruby engagement rings are given to express passion and promise of their heart.
Did you know that...The largest known ruby (250 carats) is on the crown, ordered in 1346 by Charles IV of Luxembourg, king of Bohemia (1316-78), for the shrine containing the skull of Saint Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia (921-29). It is located in the treasure of the Saint-Guy Cathedral, in Prague.
